AboutWorld Elite Sumo (WES) rumbles into New Jersey with its Prudential Center debut on Saturday, May 16, launching a new era of elite combat sumo in Newark. Following the sold-out success of Sumo Fight Club at White Eagle Hall (Jersey City, NJ), WES continues its national expansion with a high-energy, globally inspired event designed to thrill both longtime combat sports fans and first-time sumo audiences.
World Elite Sumo brings together top-level athletes from around the world, featuring live taiko drumming, dramatic entrances, and an immersive fight-night production that blends athleticism, intensity, and spectacle. The innovative WES format emphasizes quick, decisive matches with one clear winner every time, creating nonstop edge-of-your-seat action for fans of all ages.
This event will feature a one-night, single-elimination 12-man tournament, the brackets for the single-elimination tournament will be determined one day before the live event.
The 12 fighters will all compete in the first stage of the bracket-style tournament, with the six first stage fight winners advancing to the next stage of the tournament.
Those winners will be joined in the quarterfinal stage of the tournament by two of the fighters who lost their respective first stage matches, but are each granted a wild card to re-enter the tournament as a result of their strong performances in the initial stage of combat.
The eight remaining sumo competitors will battle it out across quarterfinal, semifinal and championship stages of single-elimination competition until there is one tournament champion at the end of the night.
This event was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 18 and has been rescheduled to Saturday, May 16. All previously purchased tickets will be honored.
