The NJ Devils met the Detroit Red Wings in the 1995 NHL Stanley Cup Finals, the franchise's first championship appearance, after taking down their Metropolitan Division rival, the Philadelphia Flyers, in the Eastern Conference Finals. The team claimed their first of three league titles in a convincing four-game sweep, with Claude Lemieux being awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the series' Most Valuable Player.
