The New Jersey Devils met the Detroit Red Wings in the 1995 NHL Stanley Cup Final, the franchise's first championship appearance, after taking down their Metropolitan Division rival, the Philadelphia Flyers, in the Eastern Conference Final. The team claimed their first of three league titles in a convincing four-game sweep, with Claude Lemieux being awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the 1995 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The 2024-25 season saw three contests between the Red Wings and Devils. The Red Wings claimed the first game of their season series in October, while the Devils fought back to take the victory on November 29. Their final matchup and the Devils last regular season game was April 16 at home against the Red Wings, with Detroit coming out on top.
The Devils defeated the Red Wings in 2-1 in their 2025-26 regular season series. The Devs bested the Red Wings 4-3 in their first matchup at Prudential Center on November 24. The Red Wings came back to The Rock on March 8, defeating the Devils in a 3-0 shutout. The Devils visited the Red Wings in Detroit on April 11 for their final regular season matchup, beating the Red Wings 5-3 on their home ice.
